Virtual Training Program

Welcome to Be Ready learning space!

Be Ready project brings together universities, cities, and communities from across the Danube Region to prepare for the impacts of climate change. Its main goal is to help people, especially local practitioners, understand how cities can become more resilient to heat, extreme weather, and other environmental challenges, in particular Urban Heat Islands (UHI). Through real-life pilot projects implemented in 12 countries, Be Ready explores practical ways to reduce urban heat stress, improve urban spaces, and involve citizens in creating sustainable solutions.

This training course is part of that effort. It gives you the knowledge and tools to understand UHI, apply acupuncture interventions, and contribute to building healthier, more sustainable and participatorily built cities.

Be Ready E-learning platform contains 3 thematic courses developed as the result of the implementation of the Be Ready INTERREG Danube Region project co-funded by the European Union. By joining this course, you become part of a growing community working toward climate-ready and future-proof urban environments across the Danube Region.

  • About PROJECT

Be Ready project consortium includes 19 partners from 12 countries, all working together to achieve shared goals. Led by the Sofia Development Association from Sofia, Bulgaria, each partner brings unique expertise and innovation to the collaborative efforts. More about all project partners and their contributions to the mission is available at the project webpage.

UHI are the common challenge of Danube region cities. Cities and regions need to strengthen their preparedness and the adaptive capacity of the society to cope with impacts of climate change and foster resilience at local level. To address the need for effective means of mitigating UHI effects, Be Ready partners: STUBA, BOKU, UIRS developed this online training program to share a knowledge based on the pilot projects.

  • About TRAINING PROGRAM

This Canvas course is Be Ready project’s Virtual Pilot-based training on UHI and climate change mitigation in the Danube Region. Project connects universities, cities, and communities to strengthen their readiness for climate-related risks, especially urban heat. It builds capacity for climate adaptation by combining education, real-life pilot projects, and cooperation between local authorities, experts, and citizens.

What you will learn

In this online training, you will explore how UHI affect people and places, and how cities can respond through planning, design, and community action. You will see concrete examples from 5 of our 10 Be Ready pilot cities such as Zenica, Chisinau, Galati, Varaždin, and Sofia, where different cooling and engagement interventions were tested in practice.

Who we target with our courses

Target audience

Description with primary use

Local and regional authorities (municipal and city departments; regional administrations)

Core target group using the training to build institutional capacity for UHI risk assessment, planning, and implementation of green, blue and white measures in critical urban areas, and to integrate results into local/regional policies and strategies.

Urban planners, spatial planners, architects and landscape architects

Use the content to understand UHI vulnerability and mitigation options, integrate UHI indicators and measures into plans, designs and regeneration projects, and coordinate with technical experts on concrete interventions.

Public administration staff in environment, climate, infrastructure, housing, transport, and investment units

Apply the course to interpret UHI assessments, prioritise investment in adaptation projects, prepare and manage pilot actions, and connect UHI measures with broader climate resilience agendas.

Knowledge and research institutions (universities, research institutes, students, early‑career researchers)

Use the training as a teaching and capacity‑building tool, supporting student and young professional competences in UHI risk assessment, participatory planning, and evaluation of mitigation strategies across Danube cities.

Civil society organisations and community groups

Strengthen their role as partners of cities in co‑designing and co‑implementing UHI mitigation measures, mobilising residents, and advocating for socially just and climate‑resilient neighbourhoods.

Health and social services providers

Use UHI risk and vulnerability concepts to better identify and support at‑risk populations during heat events and to co‑develop measures that reduce health and social impacts of urban overheating.

Educators, schools, and youth workers

Integrate UHI and climate adaptation topics into curricula and non‑formal education, engaging children and young people in understanding local heat risks and participating in small‑scale actions.

International, national and regional experts/consultants

Use the Be Ready framework and tools when advising cities and regions on UHI assessment and adaptation strategies, ensuring a common reference for methods, pilot typologies and participatory approaches.

Course structure

This course is organized to help you move step by step from understanding the problem of UHI to applying concrete solutions in real cities. The whole course is structured as 3 short online courses (modules), each lasting about 1 hour of reading and 30 minutes for quiz. Going through each of the 3 modules on Canvas, you will learn about the following 3 key themes:

  1. Course 1: UHI risk assessment

You start with an introductory text that explains what UHI is, why it matters in the Be Ready context, and what you will be able to do after the module. Then you move into the rationale for systematic UHI risk assessment, followed by practical methods, case examples from Be Ready pilot cities, a short barrier discussion, curated resources, and a knowledge check with self-assessment questions – quiz.

  1. Course 2: Community and citizen engagement

The course number 2 begins by situating engagement within the Be Ready and UHI framework and clarifying its importance for cities and practitioners. You explore key engagement tools and methods, see concrete examples of how partners applied them in pilot cities, discuss common obstacles and success factors, review useful resources and guides, and finish again with a knowledge check and reflection on your own context.

  1. Course 3: Technical requirements related to acupuncture measures design and implementation

Here you are introduced to small-scale “acupuncture” interventions and how they were tested in different cities. The module explains why technical precision, standards, and integration with existing infrastructure are important, presents main design and implementation steps, shows examples of measures from pilot cities, and closes with typical technical barriers, practical suggestions, resources, and the last knowledge check.

How you will learn

You will learn through a mix of readings, visual explanations, and concrete cases from BeReady pilot cities, so that you can see how concepts were applied in practice.

Throughout the courses, you will answer multiple-choice questions and short self-assessment tasks that help you check your understanding and connect the content to your own city or professional experience. At the end of each Course, you are invited to reflect on typical obstacles, think about how you might address them, and use the curated list of Be Ready deliverables, pilot reports, scientific papers, and external tools to continue exploring topics that are most relevant to you.

If you come across a new or unfamiliar term, jargon or acronym, you can find its concise definition and explanation in Be Ready UHI glossary.
