  • In 2023, Liberec transformed a large asphalt parking lot in the city centre into a green space with newly planted trees along Janských and Moskevská streets. This initiative aimed to reduce the urban heat island effect, improve air quality, and enhance the city centre's aesthetic appeal.

  • - Identified the problematic area with excessive heat absorption – the asphalt parking lot.
    - Removed the existing asphalt surface from the parking lot.
    - Prepared the soil for tree planting, ensuring proper drainage and nutrient content.
    - Selected tree species adapted to urban conditions and providing shade.
    - Planted trees along the streets, creating a green corridor.

  • Substrate Preparation: Removal of the existing asphalt surface to reduce excessive heat absorption.
Soil preparation with proper drainage and the addition of both organic and mineral substrates to optimize tree growth.
Layering and Materials: Application of crushed stone in multiple layers (for leveling and aeration) to ensure stability and efficient drainage. Integration of stabilizing elements like concrete supports and steel frames, anchored securely to support the newly laid surfaces.
Protective Measures: Installation of protective elements such as metal guards for tree trunks, treated with galvanization and appropriate coatings for longevity.
Innovative Elements: Use of shading structures and thermal insulation techniques (akin to technologies like double skin facades) to moderate temperature and improve energy efficiency.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring that the project met local municipal regulations and that all necessary permits were obtained, contributing to both safety and environmental sustainability.

  • Collaboration with Experts: Urban planners, architects, and environmental experts were consulted to tailor technical solutions to the specific urban conditions, a practice also seen in successful international green infrastructure projects.

Community Monitoring: Mechanisms were set up to allow citizens to report issues and contribute to the ongoing maintenance of the green spaces, ensuring the project’s long-term success.

  • Identify the Problematic Area: Locate the heat-absorbing zone (the asphalt parking lot).
Remove the Existing Surface: Demolish and remove the asphalt to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
Prepare the Soil: Amend the soil with the appropriate organic and mineral substrates while ensuring proper drainage.
Select and Plant Trees: Choose tree species that are well-adapted to urban conditions and plant them along the streets to form a green corridor.
Implement Technical Infrastructure: Install stabilizing and insulation measures, including concrete supports, steel frames, and protective elements.
Engage the Community: Conduct public consultations and involve local stakeholders to ensure the project meets community needs and expectations.
